Akida
Akida has two locations in Richmond. The review covers the location in Richmond’s far-west-end, off West Broad Street.
Japanese cuisine in the past five years has become very popular. Typical for any Japanese restaurant is an offering of raw fish, called sushi, sashimi, and the like, all variations of fish with rice, or fish alone, or fish with rice in rolls, that that are prepared per order, and get dipped in soy sauce flavored with green horseradish. For this reason, I feel Japanese restaurants have a harder time that other ethnic eateries, such as Chinese restaurants, in that they have to procure this very fresh, expensive fish to compete for what people know them best for.
Akida like so many others, has a sushi bar. They also offer cooked dishes, such as udon noodles and teriyaki. I have always felt they do better at fried items such as tempura and the fish dishes, rather than hot items. I have found while their sushi isn’t necessarily world-class, it is consistently good enough to be tasty and the restaurant’s service and efficiency has welcomed me back at least 12 times a year.
To sum it up: not a huge menu here. I recommend their more creative fish-based rolls, that alternate between the more popular ingredients. While the competition Ichiban is far more creative in their handrolls and the like, Akida I think does them better for consistency and taste. It’s convenience to many businesses I frequent on W. Broad St. put it in a convenient position to visit for dinner.
Recommended.
