Penn Station Subs

I recently had dinner at a franchise location of Penn Station Subs on West Broad Street, in Richmond’s far-west end.

Located next to a Cingular, this fast-food joint caught my eye some months ago when it first opened. It reminds me of one of those mall places that makes cheese steaks on a hot griddle. I placed my order after waiting 5 minutes for the manager to give a new employee directions. At that time, it was 7:15 PM. The sandwiches finally came out at 7:36 PM. The fries appeared at 7:45. That’s 30 minutes to make fries, with one customer’s order ahead. Fast food. Not.

The sandwich was okay, but not superior. I enjoyed the fact that the fries are made “to order” each order, but the service time took way too long. The fries weren’t even hot when they arrived. To their credit, they serve katsup out of a dispenser and not out of little packets.

I won’t return. The sandwiches were lackluster and the wait/service was inexcusable. $20 for two sandwiches, fries, and drinks. Better spent where food service really is fast, or where the wait is worth it.
