What the World Eats…
Time this past week had a good story on What the World Eats. What I found interesting was that no matter where we might look, we see a lot of Corn Flakes and Coca-Cola.
Except for Chad. Talk about a diet! Tonight our friend invited us over for Chinese pork dumplings.
I don’t have pictures. I was on cooking patrol, and made the sauce. The filling was ground pork, ginger, and napa cabbage.
Chinese Dumpling Sauce
- 2 parts soy sauce
- 2 parts balsamic vinegar
- 1 part spicy sesame oil
- 1 part honey
Mix well, and top over dumplings.
If you make homemade dumplings, there are various ways to cook them. To wit,
- Steam
- Boil
- Fry
I tried two compound methods: steam-fry and fry-steam. I preferred the latter method. In a non-stick pan, pan-fry the dumplings in 2 tsp. of oil. After the skins have adopted a golden color, add water, and cover the pan. Let them steam for 3-4 minutes, then serve.
In China, they eat these as a meal. In America, as an appetizer. After looking at the Time article, I think I could do a better job at managing food cost and meal amounts. My American diet isn’t all pizza and KFC, but its a far cry from the eggs, green peppers, and vegetables that are regular staples in other parts of the world.
