Visit to Cary Street

In a recent trip along Cary Street in Richmond to Can-Can, I passed a vacated store that is now occupied: Penzys Spices now has a Richmond outlet!

Some friends of mine have used their catalog for a number of years to procure high-quality seasonings from them. Of course, I think a store front is better for me, the consumer, so I can “browse” and buy at my convenience.

Can-Can was hopping this past Saturday; we gathered that several parties were there for holiday-themed get-togethers. I don’t remember any place doing a better onion soup, the bread is always great, and my entrĂ©e of duck was light yet full of little flavorful surprises on the plate.

The quizzical thing was the dessert, entitled Red Velvet Cake. This is no “red velvet cake,” as you might imagine. Instead, it was some deconstructed entity, with “red hot” ice cream, poached pear, and little dustings of meringue. The cake was dark, with chocolate favors, but the tell-tale cream cheese topping was there, albeit just enough to get the point across.

Don’t let me get you down: it was delicious. But—unusual!
